East Lancashire Light Railway

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Since we’re on holiday I’ve decided that we should do something every day this week. Preferably something we wouldn’t ordinarily do, or better still something we haven’t done even though we keep saying we will.  Yesterday it was visiting the IMAX theatre.  Today was the turn of the East Lancashire Light Railway - a trip on the steam train from Ramsbottom.

Open Season (3D)

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

We went to see Open Season in 3D at the Printworks IMAX cinema last night.  It was deserted! There was only about 6 people in the whole gigantic auditorium. Luckily this meant we got to sit in the best seats in the house (in the middle right at the back). Normally IMAX films make me feel really queasy but this was great and the 3D really added to the animation.  Open Season’s story is pretty formulaic but it’s still really good fun with loveable characters and some tugging of the heart-string moments amid the laughs. Boog the Bear has definitely got jive.

I was worried that the 3D glasses would be uncomfortable over my own glasses, but that really wasn’t a problem. The screen completely fills your view immersing you in the movie. And the seats are comfy with plenty of legroom.  I have to confess I really enjoyed it and definitely want to go again, soon.  I can’t believe we don’t go more often - it’s only 50p more than the regular cinema and the experience is much BIGGER.

Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and Mailing Preference Service (MPS)

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

We signed up to the TPS a few months ago.  It’s an online service where you can register your telephone number (landline and/or mobile) to prevent companies from cold calling you trying to sell you stuff.  It’s free, it only takes a few minutes to sign up and their website is http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Driving through the snow

Friday, February 9th, 2007

So much for the 10 inches of snow we were promised. We haven’t even had a few millimetres settle here in Manchester. It has attempted to snow though, via a bit of sleeting, and a fairly standard amount of rain. However, it was snowing as I was driving home from work this evening. Watching the headlamp-lit snowflakes flying towards my windscreen against the dark of the night sky it occured to me that this was probably the closest visual effect to accelerating towards lightspeed in the Starship Enterprise I was ever likely to experience in real life. It’s definitely a bit spacey.

Mark’s New Shoes

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

We’ve both been getting home at a sensible time this week, so tonight we decided to go to the Trafford Centre in search of some new shoes for Mark.  Now obviously, were we seeking new shoes for me we could expect to be there until closing time and still fail miserably to accomplish the task.  Mark, however, tried on a single pair, pootled up and down the aisle a couple of times, and announced to the assistant that they were very comfortable and he’d like to purchase them please.  Not only that but they are high quality leather and only £40.  You would think that if it’s this easy for men to shop they’d find it more enjoyable.  Perhaps they don’t like it because there’s just no challenge involved?

Urban Safari Vehicle

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Well, I’ve collected it!  I now have my zebra striped smart car and I’ve already fallen in love with him.  I’ve decided he’s a little boy car and I’ve called him Herb.  This is because zebras are herbivores and also because it serves as a little homage to a certain white VW Beetle.

Chinese State Circus

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

We went to see the Chinese State Circus, featuring the Shaolin Wu-Shu Warriors and Peking Opera, at the Lowry last night.  After enjoying the Tower Circus in Blackpool so much a few weeks ago I couldn’t resist getting tickets when I saw this advertised.

The Truth About Food

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Right.  I’ve just been watching the BBC’s The Truth About Food.  It was all about dieting and weight loss and offered some new tricks to try and help a person gain control of their weight.  This is (as usual) something I promised myself I’d tackle (again) at New Year.  Now it’s the beginning of February I guess it’s time I started doing something about it.
